The Yellowjacket baseball team started their season off strong this past week winning four of four games. On Tuesday, Feb. 18 the Jackets hosted Latexo for the first game of the season and came out with a 12-1 win.
They jumped into the lead early when Waylon Sturrock doubled, scoring two runs. Sturrock also earned the win on the mound for the Jackets allowing one hit and one unearned run, four strikeouts and no walks over two innings. The Jackets collected 11 hits with Sturrock, Jesse Bittick, and Turner Johnson each collecting two hits. Jayse Gay led RBI’s with two.
Thursday through Saturday the Jackets participated in the Woden tournament picking up wins from Gary 3-2, Broaddus 12-0, and Woden 2-1. Will Thomason earned the win vs Gary with three strikeouts, four runs, and no walks. Jayce Gay collected the save.
Gay went 2 for 2 at the plate leading the Jackets in hits. Cutter Lowe and Jayse Gay each had an RBI. Waylon Sturrock pitched for the Broaddus game, striking out four, walking one, and allowing four hits. Turner Johnson threw one inning striking out three. Waylon Sturrock and Jayse Gay each drove in two runs. Turner Johnson led with two hits, Rex Gilzow collected two walks, and Jesse Bittick helped with two stolen bases.
Bittick started on the mound for the win against Woden on Saturday with two strikeouts, one walk, one run, and zero hits. Jayse Gay and Rex Gilzow each collected one RBI. The Jackets will have another busy week starting on Tuesday at home versus Colmesneil at 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, February 27-March 1, the Jackets will participate in the Latexo Tournament with game times to be announced via the Yellowjacket Buzz Facebook page.
The JV squad will also have a tournament weekend in Pollok-Central with game times announced via the Yellowjacket Buzz Facebook page.
The Lady Jacket softball team traveled to a one-day tournament in Corrigan to kick off their season. The first game ended as a 4-9 loss to West Hardin.
The Lady Jackets were on the board early in the first inning after Emma Byrd singled on a bunt, and Allie Ogden with a hard ground ball each bringing in one run. In the second inning Lauren Citrano doubled to center field and Lily Read singled to center field each bringing in a run. Allie Ogden pitched, giving up five hits, two strikeouts, and 10 walks.
The next game was also a loss, 1-11 vs Trinity. Allie Ogden, Sydney Brock, Lily Read, and Tegan Toler each had one hit. This week the Lady Jackets travel to Groveton on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with a 4:30 p.m. game time. February 27-March 1 the Lady Jackets will participate in the Blues Brothers Tournament in Nacogdoches. Tentatively the Lady Jackets will play Thursday, Feb. 27 at 1p.m. versus Cushing and at 7 p.m. vs Grapeland.
On Friday, Feb. 28 game times are 4 p.m. against Waskom, and 7 p.m. vs Hudson JV. Saturday, March 1 games will be at 1 p.m. versus Woden, and 4 p.m. against Cayuga.
