COLMESNEIL – The Lady Dogs finished their regular season as the undefeated district champions, and claimed that title for the first time in seven years. The Lady Dogs took on the Gary Lady Bobcats for the bi-district round last Thursday, and although the game did not go the way they hoped, it has been a season of high notes for the team.
The Lady Dogs’ head coach Trey Bullock said that although it was not the way they wanted to end the season, it “was a fun and great season.” “Proud of the Lady Bulldogs,” he said. “Thank you to the seniors for the dedication and leadership that y’all put this season. Thank you to the community and fans that supported us throughout the season.”
The 3-0 loss to the Lady Bobcats had set scores of 25-11; 25-22 and 25-21, which ended a historic nine-game winning streak for the Lady Dogs.
Several Lady Dogs were named to the volleyball district honors, including Taryn Byrum, who was named MVP. Georgia Deckard got co-newcomer of the year, and the trio of Madison Primrose, Torie Lewis and Carlen Sluga were named to the first team.
Khlohie Hughes and Justice Pittman were named to the second team and honorable mention nods went to Grace Fowler; Kynslee Shird and Ava Underwood.
Bulldogs still on a hot streak
The Colmesneil Bulldogs continued to make history this season, as they took down another opponent last Friday, the Deweyville Pirates.
The Pirates went back home with the wind taken out of their sails to the tune of a 40-14 final score. The Bulldogs are tied for the top spot in the District 12 2A Division 2 standings with the West Sabine Tigers, who happen to be their next opponent, and the last regular game of the season, this Friday, on the Tigers’ home field at Pineland. The winner of Friday’s game will grab the district championship and the number one seed going into the playoffs.
The Tigers will go into their match with Colmesneil fresh from a 48-12 defeat of West Hardin, a team that actually gave Colmesneil a challenge a few weeks ago. The Bulldogs are hot to trot, however, with a perfect 5-0 district record and a 7-2 overall season record. To add to that, the Bulldogs have a six-game winning streak, overall.
Colmesneil has now won three games by a deficit of 26 or more points this season. Senior running back Dean Yates rushed for 248 yards and scored five touchdowns, with 12.4 yards per carry. It was his fifth game in a row with at least two rushing TDs.
The kickoff for Friday’s game is at 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
