WOODVILLE – The official softball season for the Woodville Lady Eagles kicked off on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Hennigan Park. The Lady Eagles faced the Anahuac Lady Panthers with sharp eyes and ready wings as they took to the field to start the game.
In the first inning, Kennely Foxworth-#12, pitcher, freshman, walked the first Lady Panther, followed by striking out the next.
Two batters later, as she bunted and began to run to first, Anahuac’s Sky Hedges-#12 fell in pain. She was briefly examined and was assisted to the dugout for the remainder of the game.
According to trainer Brianna Lajoie-Rachal, “It seemed to be minor. Even she doesn’t know what happened.” Postgame, Coach MacKenzie Darris weighed in: “I think she will be fine. She’s walking on it now, so, I think we are good.”
The battle resumed in the second inning as it began 1-1 and ended with the Lady Panthers up by two. The Eagles maintained their fight, however, with two strike-outs and a fumbling from Anahuac’s catcher, The Eagles swooped in to tie the game.
Foxworth and team making short work of the top of the fourth inning, opened the bottom with a loud crack as Heidi Spurlock-#8, junior- launched the ball over the fence, taking the lead.
With great coaching by Hanks and the momentum building, Kaylee Clack-#1, junior, launched a well-placed shot to left field, yielding a three base run. Kendal Standley-#10, senior, brought Clack home with a soaring ball to center field making the score 5-3 to start the fifth.
Especially after the Panthers errored at first base, allowing the Lady Eagles to fly in another point, they seemed defeated in closing the fifth inning. With a 6-3 lead, Kennely Foxworth sent the Panthers packing with a two brilliant strike-outs to end the game.
In total, Foxworth had: 9 strike-outs, 6 hits against her, 5 walks, and 3 runs, and overall, it was an excellent way for the Lady Eagles to start the season.
