Lady Jackets wrap up summer league play

CHESTER – Members of the Lady Jacket volleyball team finished their summer league play recently. The Lady Jackets played two 30-minute games each Monday night in June.

They faced competition from Corrigan, Shepherd, Hudson and Onalaska. This summer league was especially helpful to new coaches to the Lady Jacket volleyball program, Megan Nichols and Dylan Varnon. While they could not actively coach the team due to UIL rules, they could watch and take notes to get a head start on the season.

Coach Nichols and Coach Varnon or “Coach V” as he is called, come from Onalaska where they have the most recorded wins in a season, led their team to a playoff run for the first time in several years, turning that program around for the Lady Cats. Prior to Onalaska, Coach Nichols and Coach V were part of two successful teams at Neches, including regional finals one year and state semi-finals the next. They bring a lot of winning experience to Chester and are eager to start their season officially on August 1.

Tryouts for the Lady Jacket volleyball team start Saturday, August 1 from 10 a.m. until noon, and then a second session from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Day two of tryouts are Monday, August 3, 10 a.m. to noon. Participants need to bring a pair of court shoes, outside shoes, and anything needed to safely try out such as inhalers, specific braces, etc.
