WOODVILLE – Morgan Hoskins was sworn in as the new alderwoman, place one by a split vote of council members at Monday night’s council meeting.
Hoskins replaces Joyce Wilson, who stepped down in December. She was sworn in by city secretary Danita Skinner, and immediately took her chair for the meeting to proceed.
Brenda Maloy spoke before council about the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Program, which will be held, Monday, Jan. 19, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Maloy advised that “ the parade is going to start at the city park, going down MLK, then come up Charlton, and cross over where we don’t get on any main highways. We cross over and go to the Kirby gym. There will be a short program at the gym, and food and refreshments will be served. We used to just do refreshments, but things have changed, and we will have a little bit of both.”
She added, “you are welcome to walk, drive a car, ATV, all of those things; we will have people celebrating, it’s just a wonderful thing to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy of non-violence, because we’ve got a lot of things going on right now. We would appreciate it if you would just come out and help us celebrate. We will have the Woodville band perform, as well as the drill team, and children will read essays”.
In other council business, city secretary Danita Skinner advised that “ we have to update our utility billing software prior to the planned water and sewer system upgrades”. Plans are to begin the upgrades in March.
Mayor Amy Bythewood issued a proclamation naming January as Human Trafficking Awareness month, stating that, “it’s scary, and unfortunately, it is happening in our own small cities”. She praised Woodville Police Department and its chief, Mike McCulley, in their efforts to keep the city safe.
