Senate candidate forum scheduled at Emporium

WOODVILLE – A candidate forum for the GOP primary candidates vying for the seat in Senate District 3 is scheduled for Thursday, August 28 at the Emporium Stage in downtown Woodville.

The event is being hosted by the Concerned Citizens of Tyler County and will allow the public a chance to come and meet the candidates hoping to represent SD 3, which includes Tyler County, in the state legislature’s upper chamber.

Since long-serving Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) announced his retirement, Rep. Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin), a member of the state House of Representatives, declared his aspirations for the position, as well as Rhonda Ward, of Nacogdoches. There are no declared Democratic primary candidates for the seat as of this writing.

Ward has confirmed her appearance at the event, and Ashby has been invited, according to organizers.

The Senate District 3 covers 17 counties in the East Texas region, as well as a portion of Jefferson County.

The event will be moderated and cover key issues impacting East Texas, according to CCTC’s Sal Baldovinos, including fiscal responsibility, education and local control, as well as property rights. Baldovinos said CCTC is welcoming audience questions, and if anyone wishes to post questions in advance, they can comment on a post on the CCTC Facebook page highlighting the event and select questions from that post may be included in the forum.

Baldovinos said that CCTC is a platform to help educate and inform the community, so that they can make informed decisions, and hosting a candidate forum is in line with that mission.

The doors for the event open at 6:30 p.m., with the forum beginning at 7 p.m. Baldovinos said he wants to invite everyone out so that they can hear directly from the candidates.
