DAM B – Members of Tyler County 4-H recently had the honor of presenting a Quilt of Valor to veteran Herbert Daniel Odom in recognition of his military service and dedication to our nation.

Odom proudly served in the United States Coast Guard from 1971 to 1991, retiring with the rank of EMCS E-8 Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his 20 years of service, he earned numerous honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, and Marksmanship Rifleman Ribbon.

The Quilt of Valor Foundation awards handmade quilts to service members and veterans as a way of recognizing their sacrifice and service to the United States. Each quilt serves as a tangible expression of gratitude from a thankful community.

The quilt presented to Odom was a collaborative effort between Tyler County 4-H youth and dedicated adult volunteer quilters. The 4-H members stitched the quilt blocks, learning valuable sewing skills while participating in a meaningful service project. Volunteer quilters then donated their time and expertise to quilt, bind, and complete the project.

Through this effort, the youth not only developed practical skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the men and women who have served our country. The project provided an opportunity for young people to connect with veterans and express their gratitude in a personal and lasting way.

Tyler County 4-H is proud to recognize Senior Chief Odom for his years of faithful service and is grateful for the opportunity to honor him with a Quilt of Valor. The presentation serves as a reminder that the sacrifices made by our nation's veterans are remembered and appreciated by generations both young and old.

The Tyler County 4-H program extends its sincere thanks to the volunteers, families, and community members who helped make this special project possible.
