VFW partnering with SHP

JASPER – As part of the nationwide VFW Day of Service, the Woodville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2033 is partnering with Sleep in Heavenly peace for the organization’s monthly bed-build event. It will take place this Saturday, May 9, from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Jasper, at 750 East Gibson Street.

Organizers say the goal is simple but impactful: build beds for children who may currently be sleeping on floors, couches, or sharing beds due to limited resources.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit dedicated to providing beds for children, describes the effort as “changing children’s lives by turning lumber into slumber.”

Volunteers will help assemble bed components using solid wood, with many assisting in sanding and preparing materials. The event is open to individuals ages 12 and up, though anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

In addition to volunteering, community members can also support the effort by donating new twin-size bedding items.

Bedding donation drop-off locations include:

  • The Willow Tree Hallmark Store, 414 E. Gibson St., Jasper
  • Embroidery & Design, 1903 S. Magnolia, Woodville

Checks can also be mailed to P.O. Box 143, Woodville, TX 75979.

Organizers describe the experience as both meaningful and rewarding, with one phrase often shared among volunteers: “Sawdust is my glitter.”

Those interested in participating can sign up in advance through the Sleep in Heavenly Peace website, https://volunteer.shpbeds.org.
