HUMBLE – Colmesneil High School junior Dean Yates qualified for and competed in the AAU National Junior Olympic Track meet in the Decathlon event, this last week at Turner Stadium in Humble.
Out of 30 competitors from across the nation, Yates finished in sixth place overall, earning his All-American status, a bronze medal and the AAU All-American patch.
The Decathlon comprises 10 events, completed in just two days with only a 30-minute break in between events. The events are 100-meter; long jump; shot put; high jump; 400-meter; 110-meter hurdles; pole vault; discus; javelin and the 1,500-meter.
Yates’ overall score was 5252, and he had personal records in 8 of these 10 events. He hopes to continue his multi-event success next summer, but before then, he will focus on his goals for his high school sports of cross-country, football, basketball and track and field.
