HUDSON – The Chester Lady Jackets are moving on to the Regional Finals in the 1A State Softball Playoffs after sweeping eighth-ranked Brookeland in their playoff series.  Thursday night’s game in Hudson was a nail biter that saw the Lady Jackets win on a walk-off single by Emma Byrd, scoring Lilly Read.  Kaylee Toler pitched seven strong innings and got their offense going with a home run in the fourth inning.  Brookeland threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, but a fly ball out to Alyssa White ended the inning. The teams traded runs after that until Byrd’s hit in the seventh inning secured the win for the Lady Jackets. Kinsley Barnes had two runs scored, two hits and two RBI’s. The Lady Jackets left little doubt in game two on Friday in Cleveland by racking up 17 hits in a 13-2 series clinching a victory over Brookeland.  Every Lady Jacket in the lineup had at least one hit.  Kaylee Toler led the offense with four hits.  Freshmen Lily Payne and Lauren Citrano each were strong at the plate with three hits apiece.  Blakeney Whitworth got the offense started in the sixth inning, and a triple by Marae Pounds and a single by Koree Hilliard pushed across the final run of the inning.

The Lady Jackets will play in Hudson against the Neches Lady Tigers in the Regional round. The best of three series will start with game one on Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m. Game two will be on Saturday, May 20 at 6 p.m. and game three, if necessary, will begin at 8 p.m. The winner of this series will advance to the state tournament in Austin.

The Chester Yellowjackets baseball team lost out to Kennard in their playoff series last weekend. The Yellowjackets lost game one on Thursday, May 11 by a score of 2-13. The loss was predominantly due to a tough first inning, in which Kennard put up 11 runs. Game two, which was played on Friday, May 12 was a much closer match. The Jackets got on the scoreboard in the first inning but ended the game with a 3-2 loss.

The Chester Boys Golf team will head to the State Golf Meet in Kyle on Sunday. The boys will play a practice round on Sunday, May 21, and will play rounds on Monday and Tuesday, May 22-23.

Team members are Will Thomason, Jack Rayburn, Cutter Lowe, Brad Davison and Waylon Sturrock.
