The Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts is proud to announce a collaboration between Tony Award-winning Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown and acclaimed actress and singer Sally Mayes at the University of Houston on April 12. This concert, a highlight of the spring semester, serves as the culmination of the “Song Performance for Musical Theatre” course, a unique offering led by Mayes as part of her role as Artist in Residence.

The “Song Performance for Musical Theatre” course, curated by Mayes, provides students with cross-disciplinary training aimed at enhancing their confidence in musical auditions and storytelling skills through song. Mayes, a Tony Award and Drama Desk-nominated artist, brings her wealth of experience and expertise to the course, enriching students’ learning experiences and contributing to the college’s vibrant musical theatre programming.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Jason Robert Brown to Houston as part of this special collaboration,” Mayes said. “His performance, coupled with the showcase of our talented students, underscores our commitment to providing unparalleled opportunities in musical theatre.”

“We believe in providing diverse opportunities for our students to excel and become well-rounded artists,” Andrew Davis, Dean of the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts, said. “This collaboration, alongside Sally Mayes’ impactful class, underscores our dedication to fostering the artistic growth and development of our students, preparing them to shine in all aspects of the performing arts.”

The concert will feature University of Houston students in the first act, followed by Brown performing selections from his repertoire, including new compositions and pieces from his solo albums. The concert will survey the broad scope of his work as a composer and artist.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Jason Robert Brown to Houston for what promises to be an extraordinary performance,” Mayes said. “It not only serves as a fitting conclusion to our ‘Song Performance for Musical Theatre’ course, but also as a celebration of the enduring magic of musical storytelling.”

Originally from Polk County, Mayes is a graduate of Livingston High School.
