Onalaska volleyball did not back down from a power spike program, but fell in three sets to Anderson-Shiro 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18 Tuesday by the lake.
The Lady Owls are going for their fifth consecutive district championship, and the two teams were undefeated in league play going into the match. The first two sets were close, with Anderson-Shiro pulling away at the end in both.
The first set was tied at 19 before the Lady Owls rolled off six straight points. In the final set, the visitors led by as much as eight.
“They haven't been able to get to that point in quite a while, and the fact that they were able to do that is a testament to their perseverance that they have out there,” Onalaska coach Caroline Wiggins-Williford said of her team playing in a contest to decide first place. “They played well, but they did not play as a team, so we've got to figure out how to get them all to play as a team out there every single set, every single ball. That's what we're going to be working on tomorrow at practice.”
Onalaska volleyball has never won a playoff game, something this group is looking to change.
“They did not go into this game intimidated, because they know that they're good,” the coach said. “They know what they're capable of and they know that they deserve to be in a game like that with those girls. Their goal is to be district champions. Our goal as a program is to be district champions. When we make it to playoffs – because we should make it to playoffs at this point – our goal is to at least go two to three rounds. And, I think they're very capable of it.”
