Athletes celebrated at banquet

CHESTER – Chester ISD hosted the annual athletic banquet where district, state, and school awards for each sport were presented. Athletes and their families dressed up for the occasion, were fed a delicious meal, and enjoyed a night of celebration and praise for their success this year.

One of the most exciting parts of the award ceremony is when each sport has an MVP named by the coach. In football there was a three-way tie with Kasen Citrano, Jaxon Gay and Jesse Bittick.

Coach Coleman Butter expressed that you cannot give the MVP award to one without giving it to another because each player selected was valuable.

In volleyball, Coach Muncrief gave the MVP award to Marae Pounds. Cross-country MVP was Russell McDonnold; Tegan Toler was named girls’ basketball MVP and the girls’ golf MVP. The boys’ basketball MVP was Kasen Citrano. Baseball MVPs were Jaxon Gay and Jesse Bittick. Allie Ogden earned softball and girls’ track MVP.

Turner Johnson was named boys’ track MVP. Boys’ golf MVP is Gus Cochran.

The biggest award for the night, which is highly sought out by Chester athletes is the JP Johnson/Aubry Bradley Award. This award is collectively voted on by every coach and goes to the boy and girl athlete who show not only athleticism but good character, coachability, is a good teammate, and while that athlete may not always be the MVP of the team, still tries their hardest at all times, just to name a few criteria.

If you asked the coaches, they would tell you that several athletes meet these criteria, and it is usually a big task to name only one boy and one girl. This year the award went to Senior Jaxon Gay and Sophomore Sadie Garsee.
