County discusses flood plain map

GROVETON — County Emergency Management coordinator Richard Steptoe alerted the Trinity County Commissioners Court that it might be a good idea to consider creating a flood plain map.

While not on the agenda at the July 23 meeting, Steptoe told commissioners that he receives several calls a month regarding a Trinity County Flood Plain map, which the county does not have.

Without one, county residents are finding that obtaining loans for property are being denied. He also said that any maps produced by FEMA are not detailed enough.

County Commissioner Neal Smith said he has received similar calls, and asked Steptoe what needed to be done.

Steptoe said he will research the matter and report back to the court.

In a separate matter, Smith questioned why the county was approved payments on departmental credit cards without being able to see the statements.

“How can we approve something? I mean, this is like closing the gate after the horses already got out to the highway,” he said. “This ain't right. We should prove it before it's paid. That's the first thing.”

County Auditor Lenzy Hargrave said she will research the matter and bring options to the court.

In other business, the county:

  • proclaimed June as Elder Abuse Prevention Month;
  • passed a resolution recognizing July 4 as the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America; and
  • discussed renewal of an agreement with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for use of the inmate work crew.
