James T. (Jim) Murphy passed peacefully into eternal rest surrounded by his three sons on Monday, October 5, 2026 at the age of 106 in Arroyo Grande, California. He was a long-time resident of the central coast in the Lompoc and Orcutt area since 1962. He was married to his beloved wife, Nancy Ann (Brunscher) Murphy, for 70 years until her passing in 2021.

Jim was born in Livingston, Texas on September 30, 1920 to General Houston Murphy and Erma Rose Malone and was raised in rural southeast Texas along with his two brothers and three sisters. After graduating from Livingston High School in 1938 he went on to radio and electronics school in Beaumont, Texas before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps as a radio operator in 1939.

Following his enlistment, he was stationed at Nichols Field near Manila in the Philippines for two years until the outbreak of World War II at Pearl Harbor in December 1941 prompted near simultaneous attacks on the Philippines. In April 1942 he was among tens of thousands of starving, sick and depleted U.S. and Allied forces who were forced to surrender to overwhelming enemy forces. He survived the infamous Bataan Death March followed by three and a half harsh years of captivity as a prisoner of war before being liberated in September 1945 and repatriated home. He went on to a distinguished career, rising to the rank of captain in the United States Air Force before retiring in 1962. Moving to the central coast of California later that year, he continued his career as an electronics engineer in the missile and space program with Lockheed at Vandenberg Air Force Base for more than 20 years.

Family and faith were at the center of everything in Jim’s life. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. He and Nancy raised their three sons, Tom, Ken and Brian, while living in various locations across the United States and Europe, including Vallejo, California; Biloxi, Mississippi; Austin, Texas; Birkenfeld and Sembach Air Base, Germany; and Roswell, New Mexico during his military career before settling in to Vandenberg Village (Lompoc). Jim and Nancy actively supported their boys throughout their school years, making time to attend all their activities on sports teams, band concerts and parades, Boy Scouts, and so much more. The most memorable times with the family were the many annual vacations that included camping and other outdoor adventures in the Sierra mountains, redwood forests, lakes, rivers and coastal regions of California and Oregon, as well as family reunions in Texas, Kansas, Florida and Missouri.

Jim is survived by his three sons and their spouses: Tom (Laurie) Murphy, Ken (Anne) Murphy, and Brian (Stacey) Murphy. He leaves a lasting family legacy across the generations through his eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, along with his many nieces and nephews. He was beloved for his extraordinary kindness and personal attention to his family and everyone who knew him. His quiet but quick sense of humor could bring an entire room to laughter, while his indomitable yet calm strength, his deep and enduring Christian faith, and the extraordinarily resilient spirit that carried him through the most unimaginable perils of his POW experience in WWII also carried him through the remainder of his 106 years of life. He was both grateful and humble to be able to see the documentary of his life story published in 2009 in the book “…When Men Must Live,” which leaves behind a treasured legacy of insights and life lessons for all of us that will endure forever.

Interment with full military honors will be at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026 at Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, CA 93202. Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary at www.dudleyhoffmanmortuary.com in Santa Maria.
