Pirates stun Hardin-Jefferson, bring a 34-28 district victory home

The Shepherd Pirates entered Hardin-Jefferson territory Friday night with the odds leaning slightly toward the home team, but instead of remaining the underdog, they delivered a statement victory, stunning the Hawks 34-28 in a district showdown.

The win pushed Shepherd to 5-1 on the season and gave Pirate Nation another reason to believe this team is a serious contender as district play continues.

Hardin-Jefferson came out ready to defend its home field, but Shepherd gradually found its footing. It took much of the opening quarter for the Pirates to get a feel for the Hawks' offensive approach. Once the Shepherd defense settled in, however, the momentum began to shift; when the Pirates found their rhythm, the Hawks had their hands full.

Hardin-Jefferson put the first points on the scoreboard for an early 7-0 lead; in the second quarter, Shepherd Quarterback Kyler Syracuse found tight end Brayden White open in the end zone for the Pirates' first touchdown.

The Pirates kept the pressure on as Ben Coyle followed his blockers into the end zone for another Shepherd touchdown, and a successful two-point conversion helped extend the Pirates' advantage.  What began as a challenging opening quarter had turned into a strong showing for Shepherd, with the offense finding opportunities and the defense making life increasingly difficult for Hardin-Jefferson.

On the other side of the ball, White and Michael Weekes helped lead a defensive effort that kept Hardin-Jefferson scoreless through the second and third quarters.

Hardin-Jefferson still had time to make things interesting, but penalties proved costly as the Hawks repeatedly found themselves moving the ball forward, only to give back valuable yardage through dead-ball fouls, personal fouls and illegal-use-of-hands penalties; still, they erupted for 21 points in the fourth quarter, turning what had been a comfortable Shepherd advantage into a tense finish.

Still, as the final seconds ticked away, Shepherd held on to its lead and secured the 34-28 district victory.

Shepherd is scheduled to travel to face the Jasper Bulldogs on Friday. Jasper enters the matchup at 2-4 following a 59-14 loss to Silsbee, but the Pirates will need to bring the same focus and discipline they displayed against Hardin-Jefferson.

Coldspring

The Trojans opened up their Friday game against Kirbyville with an 8-6 first-quarter lead, but 19-point second quarter and 13-point third quarter scoring sprees put Coldspring on its heels, and ultimately gave the Wildcats a 45-14 district win.
