Season openers yield mixed results

The start of football season was a mixed bag for Tyler County schools last week. The Colmesneil Bulldogs and Woodville Eagles both experienced crushing losses at home, while the Warren Warriors started off with a win on the road.

Colmesneil 0, Cushing 27

Due to a referee shortage, the Colmesneil Bulldogs hosted their season opener at Taylor Field last Thursday against the Cushing Bearkats, instead of Friday.

The ‘Dogs last met up with the Bearkats on the road last year, also for the opening game of the season, and it was a close contest, which they only lost by two points.

This time around, the home-field advantage didn’t prove lucrative with a 27-0 shut-out. New head coach and athletic director Chad Coker and his team went into the game with plenty of experience, as the ‘Dogs had eight offensive starters and 11 defensive starters returning.

Senior running back Jack Yates had 10 tackles, with six of them being tackles for loss. He also led the Bulldogs in receptions and receiving yards.

The Bulldogs will travel to Corrigan next, where they’ll take on another team of Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.

Woodville 6, LCM 21

For the Woodville Eagles’ season opener, at home against the Battlin’ Bears of Little Cypress-Mauriceville, a home-field advantage just wasn’t the key. The Eagles ended Friday night with a 21-6 bruising.

Senior QB Corey McDaniel threw for 82 yards on 9 of 20 attempts. Sophomore WR Amare Stephens was his top target, picking up 39 receiving yards. On the ground, junior running back Austin Land rushed for 59 yards and the Eagles’ sole touchdown.

This Friday, the Eagles will trek on over to Buna to play the Cougars at 7 p.m.

Warren 33, Scarborough 0

The absence of a home-field advantage didn’t slow down the Warren Warriors in their opener.

The Warriors traveled to the Houston area to take on the Scarborough Spartans Warrior head coach Kenneth Riedinger has a team of six offensive starters returning and five defensive returning starters.

The team proved to be too much for the Spartans, and bagged a 33-0 shutout over their first opponent of the season.

This week, Warren gets to use its home field to host the Huntington Red Devils, Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
