The Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs will look to build on a strong start in district when they travel to Jewett for a matchup against the Leon Cougars this Friday.
Corrigan enters the contest with some momentum, after earning a 21-10 victory over Centerville in last week’s district opener. The Bulldogs leaned heavily on their running game, while the defense came through with several important stops, including two second-half turnovers on downs.
Under head coach Derek Thomas, the Cougars should provide another early test, as they enter with a 4-1 overall record and 1-0 record in district.
Their only loss came against Buffalo, 35-19, before Leon responded with three consecutive victories over Bosqueville, Kerens and Iola.
Leon has produced plenty of offense during that stretch, scoring at least 40 points in four of its five games this season.
Senior running back Parker Thomas has been one of the Cougars’ primary threats on the ground, while junior receiver Keydrick Johnson has proved to be a versatile option in the offense.
Defensively, senior linebacker Cullen Vestal has been among Leon’s leading tacklers, while junior defensive end Barrett Speer has provided pressure up front.
For Corrigan, establishing the run could again be an important part of controlling the contest.
The Bulldog defense will face the challenge of slowing a Leon attack that has been much more productive than Centerville’s.
Corrigan’s defense, led by coordinator Amaro Villarreal, has continued to improve since the beginning of the season and held the Tigers scoreless throughout the second half last week.
“Coach V is a hell of a coach, and I have a great defensive staff. They are putting our guys in position to make plays,” said Bulldog head coach Brett Ratliff. “We had that standard standout year in 2022. We know how to play defense, and this team is buying into that right now.”
Friday will also give Corrigan an opportunity to reverse the result from last season. Leon defeated the Bulldogs 40-14 in Corrigan during the 2025 district schedule, before eventually finishing 11-1 overall and undefeated in district play.
The recent series between Corrigan and Leon has gone back and forth over the past three seasons.
Leon escaped with a narrow 27-22 district victory at home in 2023 before Corrigan answered the following year with a dominant 33-0 shutout of the Cougars in Jewett.
Leon turned the tables again last season, defeating Corrigan 40-14 at Bulldog Stadium.
The Cougars advanced last year two rounds into the playoffs, defeating Shelbyville 55-40 before falling to Beckville by a narrow 21-20 margin.
“If you look at our match of the past two years, aggression is what stuck out the most. We were the more aggressive team two years ago,” Ratliff said. “We made too many mistakes early in last year‘s matchup and had to play from behind.”
Both teams enter Friday unbeaten in district play, with Corrigan, Leon and Lovelady each beginning the district schedule at 1-0.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Leon High School in Jewett.
