COLDSPRING — In a closely contested defensive showdown, the Trinity Tigers secured a hard-fought 42-37 victory over the Coldspring Trojans on Feb. 4.
The game featured a slow offensive start, with both teams scoring just 10 points in the first quarter.
At halftime, Coldspring led 24-19 after outscoring Trinity 14-9 in the second quarter. However, Trinity took control in the second half, limiting Coldspring to just 13 total points while adding 23 of their own to seal the victory.
Both teams showcased strong defensive efforts, limiting scoring opportunities throughout the game. Trinity struggled to keep pace in the second quarter but responded well after halftime, capitalizing on key defensive stops and fast-break opportunities.
Coldspring had a chance to reclaim the lead late in the fourth quarter but couldn’t convert on open looks, allowing Trinity to secure the win.
Top scorers were Ayden Debose with 15 points, Tristan Bass with 12 points, Terian “Turbo” Maxie with 10 points, Hunter Ogden with 3 points, and Chanston Holland and Darryn Bass with a point apiece.
Groveton
The Indians lost a district tilt against Latexo 69-17 on Feb. 4.
Top scorers were Ty Torregrossa and Kutter Minter with 5 apiece.
On Friday, Groveton lost to Normangee 74-32 to end the season 6-21 overall (0-12 district).
Centerville
The Bulldogs posted two losses last week to drop to second in the district, behind Wells, who won 54-52 over Centerville on Friday.
The Dawgs also lost to Kennard 69-53 on Feb. 4.
Against Kennard, Jake Slaten 17 points, while Hardy Brown added 16.
Apple Springs
The Eagles split games last week, losing 72-56 to Broaddus but winning over Laneville by forfeit on Feb. 4.
Girls
Trinity
Despite a competitive first half, the Coldspring Lady Trojans’ defensive intensity in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference-maker, shutting down the Lady Tigers 42-37.
At halftime, the game was deadlocked at 23 points apiece, setting the stage for an intense second half. As the clock wound down in the final minutes, two Lady Trojans fouled out while attempting to halt Trinity’s offensive efforts. However, the Lady Trojans’ defense remained steadfast, preventing the Lady Tigers from scoring at all in the fourth quarter.
Bree Davidson led the scoring effort with an impressive 16 points, including four three-pointers, one two-point field goal, and a 2-for-4 performance at the free-throw line. She was followed by Mariah Tyson with 8 points, Paetyn Jolly with 6 points, Emma Sustaita with 3 points, and Summer Ogden with 4 points.
On Friday, Trinity lost a district tiebreaker against Crockett 50-43.
Bree Davidson again led the scoring with 24, while Mariah Tyson added 8 points and 16 rebounds.
Groveton
The Lady Indians close out their season with a 50-26 loss to Latexo.
Leading scorers were Darbi Parker with 10 and Lauren Moore, Laney Peterson, and Kayleigh Albus all with 4.
Apple Springs
The Lady Eagles won their final game of the season, downing Laneville 28-27.
Katie Davis posted half of the teams points at 14.
Centerville
The Lady Bulldogs lost their final game of the season to Kennard 42-12.
