COLDSPRING — The Coldspring-Oakhurst Trojans welcomed the Buna Cougars to town Thursday night, looking to build momentum as they continue adjusting to a new playbook and an entirely new coaching staff.
While the Cougars left with a 20-8 victory, the Trojans showed signs of progress, particularly on the defensive side of the ball after halftime. Buna improved its season record to 5-3 with the win, while Coldspring-Oakhurst fell to 1-6.
Buna held a 14-point advantage at halftime, but the Trojans came back onto the field with adjustments and a renewed determination. Coldspring's defense tightened up, limiting the Cougars to just six points in the second half. The Trojans also found a way to put 8 points on the board after the break, showing that the team could make adjustments of its own. Despite the improved effort on both sides of the ball, Coldspring was unable to close the gap and move ahead of Buna.
Coldspring will look to carry the lessons from Thursday night's game into its next matchup, traveling to face the East Chambers Buccaneers on Friday. East Chambers enters the contest with a 5-2 record after a 21-14 loss to Anahuac.
The Pirates overpowered Jasper 36-6 on Friday.
The win gives Shepherd a 2-0 district record (6-1 overall) and currently puts the Pirates in first place.
The team put up 384 yards of offense, which include Ben Coyle with 196 rushing yards and 2 TDs, Jacorey Davis 109 yards rushing. Brayden White pulled in a 25-yard pass from J.J. Bennett for a TD.
Head Coach Miles Robison said that Weston Hoffart and Michael Weekes were defensive standouts, as the offensive and defensive lines dominated the game.
