Minimum runs upset district leaders

Corrigan-Camden baseball pulled off an upset over its rival Friday night on the north end of Polk County, defeating the district leaders from Groveton 1-0.

Even so, the Indians closed out district play as District 24-2A champs.

Each team had trouble getting runners to third base, as defense and pitching kept both offenses off the board.

Threatening in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded and no outs, Bulldogs Kreek Johnson, Layton Cox and Braylon Levy had all collected hits. A fielder's choice off the bat of Will Ratliff was sent back to home for a force out. Then, a fly out to center field led to a play at the plate, where the runner was out for the double play to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Groveton's Cooper Shanafelt singled, and a sacrifice bunt from Trystin Ard moved him over. A sacrifice fly from Ty Torregrossa got him to third base, but a ground out to shortstop stranded the runner at third. That would be as close as the Indians would get to scoring Friday, dropping their first district game of the year.

On the mound, Groveton’s Blake Chaney threw 6 innings, allowing only one unearned run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The Tigers had a great week last week, winning a pair of games over Crockett to wind down the season. On Monday, however, the team fell to New Waverly 10-0 in a game moved due to weather.

On April 14, Trinity downed Crockett 25-6 behind solid hitting performances by Brady Arnold and David Alexander, who both turned in 3 hits apiece. Craig Bass added a pair of hits, and Chance Barron’s lone hit turned out to be a dinger that put 3 runs on the board.

On Friday, the Tigers turned 8 hits into 24 runs, taking advantage of 18 walks and 9 stolen bases to put the final score of the run-ruled game at 24-14, the second defeat of Crockett for the week.

Centerville

The No. 3-ranked Centerville Bulldogs have won 14 in a row since the start of baseball season after defeating Broaddus 20-0 on the road on April 14 and Lufkin JV 14-4 on Wednesday.

Senior Kolt Larsen drove in 4 runs on 3 hits including a 3-run home run. Larsen's homer, plus the dinger in the Wednesday game, made it 7 games in a row a player has hit a homer for Centerville, as 4 different players have hit home runs during this stretch.

Coach Geoffrey Hollis said it has been a historically dominant start for Centerville, who have outscored their opponents 176-10 on the season.

Offensively, Centerville has 5 players hitting .400-plus on the season, with Kolt Larsen hitting an incredible .658 with 2 HRs and 25 RBIs to lead the way offensively.

Defensively, the Bulldogs have only surrendered a combined 17 hits through 13 games. Centerville pitching has tossed 4 no-hitters already this season, one of them being a perfect game.

Sophomore Hardy Brown leads the Bulldogs on the mound having pitched 23 innings, only surrendering 9 hits and 1 earned run along with 37 strikeouts.

Sadly, that came to an end on Saturday as the Bulldogs were downed 11-1 by Shelbyville on Saturday.

Brown and Larsen, taking turns on the mound, threw 9 strikeouts and gave up 5 hits. Brown and Wyatt Clede had the lone hits for the Bulldogs.

Apple Springs

The Eagles lone game last week was a 11-5 loss to Chester.

Cooper Campbell and Rance Howell split time on the mound, combining for only 3 strikeouts while giving up 9 hits. Ethan Leblanc and Howell each posted 2 hits to lead the offense.
