TRINITY — The Tigers fell to the Kountze Lions 63-35 on Friday night at Tiger Stadium behind lackluster play and penalties.
The Lions took the opening kickoff and were able to drive the ball down the field to take an early lead. After a penalty stalled the Tigers opening drive, the Lions again marched down the field and extended the lead to 14-0. The Tigers were able to get on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run by Terian Maxie.
Trailing 14-7 as the second quarter started, the Lions scored on the first play and extended the lead to 21-7. The Tigers’ next drive ended with an interception and the Lions were again able to score and take a 28-7 lead into the locker at halftime.
The Tigers opened the third quarter with the ball and with a 12-yard run by Ayden Debose and tightened the score to 28-14. Following a fumble on the kickoff, the Tigers took over at the 50-yard line, and a 10-yard touchdown run my Maxie narrowed the lead to 28-21.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Lions were able to return the kickoff the length of the field and regain the 14-point lead. After another Tiger punt, the Lions capitalized on the short field and were able to increase their lead to 42-21. Before the third quarter ended the Lions had scored again and led 49-21.
The fortunes for the Tigers did not improve in the fourth quarter as the Lions extended the lead to 56-21, the Tigers continued to battle and scored two more touchdowns with a 25-yard run by Jamarion Corley and an 8-yard run by Jadrion Harris. The Lions scored once more and gave the Tigers a heartbreaking 63-35 loss and an 0-2 district record.
The Tigers will be idle this week as they prepare to face the Warren Warriors on Oct. 17 at Warren. Scheduled kickoff will be 7 p.m.
The Eagles lost their Homecoming bid on Friday to Campbell 74-26.
The loss puts their record at 3-3 overall.
