Eagles, Indians clinch district titles

Two teams from Trinity County schools took home district titles last week and are on their way to the show.

The Apple Springs Eagles went 3-0, beating Centerville 12-0 on April 23, downing Kennard 10-1 on Wednesday and clinching the title with a 10-0 blanking of Wells on Friday.

The Eagles will face Slocum in Elkhart on Thursday.

Dakota Campbell, who handled pitching against Wells and Centerville, threw his 100th strikeout of the season on Friday as part of his 10 strikeouts of the night.

Campbell also went 7-for-12 at the plate in the three games, driving in 9 RBIs, while hitting 3 singles, 3 doubles and a triple.

Zeth Dugat went 3-for-6 on the week, with 2 RBIs, 4 singles and a three-bagger. Dugat also had mound duty against Kennard, throwing 8 strikeouts while allowing only 1 run on 7 hits.

Centerville’s Friday game was a 23-15 loss to Kennard.

Groveton

The Indians won 15 home games running with two wins over Corrigan-Camden — 6-0 on Friday and 16-4 on April 23.

The win makes them undefeated in district with a 12-0 record (22-5 overall) and moves them to the bi-district round where they will face Grapeland in a doubleheader on Friday in Nacogdoches.

On April 23, Dax Parker, Jake Plotts, Jackson Cathey, Cash Moore and Cade White all had 2 hits apiece to drive the offense, while Ty Torregrossa tossed 4 strikeouts and allowed only 6 hits on the mound.

On Friday, Plotts had the big bat, getting 2 hits and driving in a run. Tanner Steubing had mound duty and threw 11 strikeouts while allowing only 3 hits.

Trinity

The Tigers ended their season with a 10-3 loss to Tarkington.

Girls

Groveton

The Lady Indians continue to earn their 5th-place state ranking by beating Joaquin in 2 games in the bi-district round of the state softball tournament.

On Friday, Groveton blanked the Lady Rams 13-0, and on Saturday won 12-2 to advance to the area round, facing Deweyville on Thursday.

Apple Springs

The Lady Eagles lost in the first round of state softball tournament, falling to Martinsville 20-1 on April 23 and 16-1 on Thursday.

On April 23, Makenzie Cockrell led the offense with 3 hits and driving in the sole run for Apple Springs. Cockrell and Abrie McWhorter took turns on the mound, combining for 6 strikeouts but allowing 18 hits.

On Thursday, Chloe Aycock and Sophie Oldham had the only hits for Apple Springs, and the tandem of Cockrell and McWhorter were on the mound again, tossing 5 strikeouts while allowing 13 hits.
