Lady Jackets, ‘Jackets take on Brookeland, Broaddus

Girls basketball All-District awards were announced. Ty Cochran earned Freshman of The Year, Sydney Brock was named First Team, and Kyli Handley was named Second Team.

The Lady Jackets played three games this past week due to bad weather the previous week. They traveled to Brookeland on Monday and played a thrilling 12 innings. Lily Read started the game off early with a homerun in the first inning. She hit another home run in her next at bat in the third inning scoring two runs. Lily Payne and Emma Byrd singled in the fifth inning to take the lead 6-5. Holly Moore, Lauren Citrano, and Allie Ogden each collected multiple hits.

Allie Ogden pitched 7 of the 12 innings surrendering three hits, two runs, three strikeouts, and five walks. The game however did not end in the Lady Jackets favor, as the Brookeland Lady Cats laid down a perfectly executed bunt and scored the winning run on an error. 

On Tuesday the Lady Jackets fell to Broaddus 6-10 despite out-hitting the Lady Bulldogs nine to seven. Allie Ogden had a big game at the plate hitting a grand slam. 

At the end of the week the Lady Jackets got a 19-6 win against West Sabine. Lily Read drove in four runs on two hits, with a triple in the third inning and a single in the fifth inning. Sydney Brock singled, scoring two runs. Emma Byrd went two for four at the plate and led the team in RBI’s with five. Kinsley Barnes, Allie Ogden, and Sydney Brock each collected three hits. Holly Moore, Read, and Lily Payne each had multiple hits. Overall the Lady Jackets collected 17 hits. Kinsley Barnes earned the win in the circle allowing two hits, five strikeouts, and two walks. 

This week the Lady Jackets host Colmesneil on Tuesday and then travel to Chireno on Friday, March 22 with game time starting at 5 p.m. 

The Yellowjacket baseball team traveled to Broaddus for a 4-3 win. The Jackets took the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to singles by Trayce Knox and Turner Johnson.

Will Thoamson earned the win for the Jackets giving up seven hits, three runs, striking out six and walking one. Jesse Bittick collected the save as relief. The Jackets collected 11 hits in the game. Jesse Bittick, Turner Johnson, and Waylon Sturrock each collected two hits. Johnson led RBI’s with two. 

At the end of the week the Jackets bats fell off and they came up short against West Sabine, 4-8. Waylon Sturrock took the loss as the starting pitcher going five innings allowing eight runs, eight hits, striking out five and walking three. Bradley Davison went 2 for 4 with two RBI’s, and stole two bases. 

This week they play Colmesneil on Tuesday and travel to Chireno with game time starting at 5 p.m.
