Lady Jackets defeat Spurger for bi-district title

On Tuesday April 23 the Lady Jackets traveled to Broaddus for a playoff warm up game. Although the Lady Jackets out hit the Lady Bulldogs 6-3 they still fell 4-2. Emma Byrd led with two hits. Lily Read doubled, scoring one in the first inning. Read led RBI’s with that one run. Kinsley Barnes took the loss for the Lady Jackets surrendering three runs on two hits, striking out five and walking six. 

On Friday April 27, the Lady Jackets defeated Spurger 15-4 for a Bi-District title. Lily Read drove in four runs on two hits. Read hit a home run to right field in the second inning, scoring three runs, and singled in the fifth inning, scoring one. The Lady Jackets took the lead early in the top of the first inning after Allie Ogden doubled, scoring one run and Lily Payne singled, scoring two runs. The Lady Jackets scored five runs on four hits in the top of the third inning.

Ogden doubled, scoring three runs, and Payne singled, scoring one run. Kinsley Barnes earned the win, giving up three hits and one run over three and one third innings, with four strikeouts and three walks. The Lady Jackets advance to the Regional Quarter-Finals and will face Martinsville on Wednesday May 1 for the first of a best two out of three game series. The games will be held in Hudson, Wednesday at 6 p.m., Thursday at 4 p.m. and, if needed, Saturday at noon. Gate fees will be $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The Yellowjacket baseball team finished up district play this week defeating Zavalla 13-2 on Tuesday April 23 but then losing to Brookeland on Friday April 26.

The Jackets jumped on Zavalla early, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Will Thomason drew a walk, scoring one run, Jesse Bittick singled, scoring two runs, a Zavalla error scored two runs, and Turner Johnson doubled, scoring two runs. Rex Gilzow singled in the second inning, adding one run and Cutter Lowe doubled in the third inning scoring one run. Will Thomason earned the win for the Jackets coming in as relief for Jesse Bittick. Thomason surrendered one hit and zero runs over two innings with four strikeouts, and one walk. Bittick pitched two innings and had two hits, two runs, three strikeouts, and two walks. 

On Friday April 26 the Jackets played a late ballgame in Brookeland. The Jackets scored their only run in the first inning. Bradley Davison and Turner Johnson collected one hit each. Cutter Lowe earned the RBI. Will Thomason took the loss, surrendering five runs on five hits, striking out two and walking six.

The Jackets will face Martinsville for the Bi-District title. The game is scheduled to be played at Alex Johnson Memorial Field on May 3 at 4 p.m., but weather and field conditions could alter plans. Updates will be posted to the Chester Yellowjacket “Buzz” Link on Facebook. 

Golfers reschedule

The Yellowjacket Golf team was scheduled to play this week but course conditions in San Marcos forced a reschedule for May 6-7 in Manor.
