By Tony Farkasnews@sanjacnews.com COLDSPRING — The Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD Board of trustees is looking toward the future, including the best use of its facilities, a possible bond issue and what to do in the face of uncertain state funding. Superintendent Dr. Bryan Taulton said that at the April 22 meeting, the board discussed long-term planning, including the possibility of issuing bonds, as part of the November election. At the December 2023 meeting, the trustees discussed the future of the district’s campuses, looking toward using buildings to provide space for a growing student population. That includes repurposing the Jones complex as a campus for students in grades 3-6, ultimately creating an intermediate school. Taulton said that if a bond election is held and passed, the current intermediate school will become the elementary school following the renovation. By Tony Farkaseditor@trinityconews.com GROVETON — The Groveton ISD Board of Trustees are looking to place an armed security officer at its campus in an effort to beef up security. Superintendent Jim Dillard said that at the April 22 board meeting, members approved seeking an officer, but the item still is in the planning stages. Dillard said the board plans to come up with a description of duties and look around to find what’s best for the district. “We’ve had discussions with staff members and the board, and while our exemption allows us to have guardians at school (teachers who are authorized to carry firearms) … we thought it would be better to have a professional presence,” he said. Dillard said the district will either hire an individual resource officer or contract with a law enforcement agency. “They will be a presence, be armed, and protect students,” he said. “I don’t know what’s best, but this will give me permission to begin the process.” In other business, the board:…

We have a Facebook page and lots of good news is shared there. There is a lot to brag about. Our students have had much success in competitions at major livestock shows, county fairs, as well as FFA/4H, cosmetology, UIL events, team, and individual sporting events. Did you see that Groveton ISD won first place in UIL competitions of each elementary, junior high and high school competition in the district? Our kids are not just athletes, talented cosmetologists, and agriculture whizzes, they are smart and have great adults as their leaders. The film God’s Not Dead, which stars Shane Harper, Kevin Sorbo and David A.R. White, is described as a story about a college philosophy professor Jeffrey Radisson, who is portrayed by Sorbo, who makes his students sign a declaration that “God is dead.” One student, Josh Wheaton, portrayed by Harper, refuses to do so and the professor requires him to debate the topic, with other students deciding the winner. The event will begin at dark, and along with the movie, there will be a bonfire, popcorn and other refreshments, all free of charge. This event will feature nachos and spiral-fried potatoes. There will be worship music and activities for kids an hour before the show.
