This month, Family Restaurant & Daiquiris to Go became the Shepherd Chamber Business of the month till January 2025 ends. The owners are giving away free Christmas lunches, delivering to people who are shut in if they register first, as well as those who come to the restaurant. They are grateful to all who have donated to this event and I will be able to take photos on the day for the next column.

Walterine Carr with her family and helpers are ready to feed a lot of people and have said they want to show their gratitude by giving back to others. Call (346) 988-5059 for more information. Serving begins at 11 a.m.

• Have you seen the 20-foot Christmas Tree outside of the Impact Center Resale shop on North Byrd Avenue? It is beautiful, made so with the help of local pastors and donors. It is a Healing Tree and people have placed decorations in memory of those they love here and beyond. It is a lovely sight and a symbol of what the season is really about.

• San Jacinto County Senior Center celebrated Christmas Lunch sponsored by Lamb Propane. At the last count nearly all the spaces were reserved so this was be a very Merry Christmas for the Center members.

The meal, on Dec. 20, was the last day of fall, then we are into winter although it feels like it has already arrived. But, Dec. 21 is also the shortest day of the year, so we can look forward to the daylight lasting longer from then on.

•I enjoyed visiting Shepherd Middle School and Deidre Richardson’s sixth-grade students. Mayor Charles Minton and I had been invited to hear the presentations of students who had proposals of how to improve life in our community. They gave us ideas to work on and I hope to follow up with this class. They were very impressive.

• Guess who is 100 years old the day after Christmas Day? A very lively lady called Nita McCarty will celebrate this amazing accomplishment. Nita plays bridge, bingo and is a member of SJC Women’s League. She is very skilled with numbers and puts her computer skills to work keeping track of the club player’s scores.

Nita’s “Centenarian” words to live by are “keep on keeping on.” Well, she certainly is doing that. A very happy birthday to her and a wonderful new year.
