There is a lot happening in our county, and more is coming as the holiday season begins. The Coldspring VFD will hold its fifth annual Fire Fest on Oct. 26, starting at 10 a.m. at the Fire Station location, 20 Hill Ave.
Entry is free to all to enjoy a silent auction, scarecrow contest, chili cook off, pie contest, gun raffle and candy, fun and more. Business owners are invited to have a booth to advertise their business.

• Shepherd VFD enjoyed ice cream and peach cobbler after their meeting. From their photo it looks as though they all were ready to get started. Chief Jenkins is center, his wife Amy with Charlie the dog and mom Myrna at the end. Thank you to both teams of First Responders for all they do.
• Halloween is coming. The City of Shepherd, with the EDC hosting the event, will have a Treat Night on the evening of Halloween at the Community Center Park. Time is not yet confirmed but will soon be announced.
If you do not know, The Haunted Jail will be ready to scare you on the evenings of Oct. 25-27 from 6:30-10 p.m. Cost for adults is $10 and for children $5. This is always a special event, with actors in the roles of scary creatures such as werewolves, witches, ghosts and so on. You have an opportunity to see the museum which was a real jail last century till the mid-1980s. Downstairs were the living quarters of the jail keeper and family; upstairs are the cells for the inmates.
Located in Old Town Coldspring at 200 Slade Ave., this event is hosted by the SJC Historical Commission. Go to their Facebook and web site for more information. Information on the raffle fundraiser for the Historical Commission coming soon.
• Both political parties have upcoming events. Both are on Oct. 12. Democrats are having a Fall Gala with music, a live auction and fun. It will be in Jones Auditorium in Coldspring, starting at 6 p.m. Candidates featured are Laura Jones for U.S. Representative District 8; Lauren Ashley Simmons for Texas House District 146; and Katherine Culbert for Railroad Commission. The Republican Party of our county is having a Fun-raiser on Oct. 12. Yes, a Fun-raiser with lots of fun including food and kids activities. Running from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the headquarters in Coldspring, the whole family is invited to come out and enjoy the day. Located at 201 Highway 150 with more information at SanJacGOP.com/events.
• On Thursday, SJC Women’s League will host guest speaker Karen Smithson who will talk on “Using Social Media at Any Age.” A lot of us know something about using social media but do not know how to send photos, avoid scams, etc. Lunch will be $15, and members are asked to remember to RSVP.
• Coldspring Chamber of Commerce held its last of the year luncheon last week. Diners were treated to chicken piccata, wild rice, asparagus and delicious chocolate chip brownies. The students of the Culinary Arts Class created all of the food with their teacher introducing each one to the diners. Chamber President Jennifer Hoff with VP Calandra Johnson gave a State of the Chamber talk and introduced to board and other community leaders. It was a very enjoyable lunch.
• Coldspring Garden Club held its October meeting with a very interesting presentation of how to make a Living Wreath, with all the plants being rooted into the soil inside the round container, made with moss and wire, soil, hessian cloth and some fertilizer.
We were all given a handout on bluebonnets, planting information included. President Rhonda Sherling introduced her board and introduced new members and guests.
• Ladies of the Red Hat Club will meet on Friday at the SJC Senior Center in Coldspring for lunch. Everyone sends Wanda Gardner a get-well wish and hopes to see her there.
