Commissioners consider road map renewal

GROVETON — A discussion about extending a cemetery road led the Trinity County Commissioners Court to consider hiring a firm to update the county road map.

At the May 13 meeting, the court approved a measure seeking to extend Burke Cemetery Road by 4,850 feet after Commissioner Steven Truss pointed out that his crews maintain the road past the cemetery, but that additional portion isn’t reflected on the county road “bible.”

Commissioner Neal Smith said he has long maintained the map needs to be updated, since it was last done in 2007 and none of the roads are right. He said it is necessary to find a firm that can remeasure all county roads.

County Auditor Bonnie Kennedy said that her office can look into companies that can perform that kind of work and report back to the court.

In other business, commissioners:

  • approved a bid from Gardner Fuels for the county’s gasoline and diesel needs for the next fiscal year;
  • approved a bid from Waters Construction for repair work on Lloyd Bell Road;
  • approved keeping roofing materials instead of declaring it as surplus;
  • approved a grant for a license plate reader for the Sheriff’s Office;
  • approved a DOT Safe Streets and Roads Grant;
  • approved a service agreement for the Statewide Automated Victim Notification Service;
  • approved a $3,000 donation from Steely Lumber Co. for road repair; and
  • approved the allocation of capital credits from the Texas Comptroller’s Office.
