Council hears plea for animal control

TRINITY — The city council heard an impassioned plea from a teenager to do something about dogs running loose within the city.

Thirteen-year-old Levi Barton told the council on Thursday that loose dogs are a huge public safety matter that needs to addressed immediately.

He related a story about a child in Houston that was attacked by a dog, and while attempting to escape, he was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Barton also told of a time he and his brother were walking their dogs, both of which were on leashes, and they also were attacked. In attempting to break it up, Barton’s father was bitten, and one of the Bartons’ animals lost an eye.

“We have an opportunity to be a model of safety; the kids need to feel safe in the city,” he said.

Mayor Billy Goodin invited the teen to serve on a committee that will be created to deal with the issue. Since the matter was not an agenda item, no action was taken.

In other business, council members:

• approved a city of Trinity Human Resources policies and procedures handbook; and

• tabled a discussion on whether to refurbish or replace a ground water storage tank at the Rockdale booster station.
