Countdown to the new school year

Posted

This will be a busy week for most of Trinity residents, especially parents with school-aged children, school workers, staff workers, teachers, volunteer workers, and bus drivers.

One week to work the bugs out, and next Monday is the real test for the first day of school for TISD’s 2026-2027 new school year.

I will repeat the first week of activities in August and after that you are on your own. However, I will give you some helpful hints for you to plan your yearly holidays and weekends during this new school year.

Last week of TISD Events before school start on Monday, Aug. 10.

Meet the Teacher Night on all three TISD campuses this week. One is on Thursday, Aug. 6, at Lansberry Elementary and the other two are on Friday, Aug. 7, at 5:30-7 p.m.

Meet the Tiger Night will follow at the TMS and THS Campus Gym when their Meet the Teacher Night event ends at 7 p.m.

As most parents know, attendance matters for their students’ promotions, helpful reminders printed in writing (like the one found on the TISD website) can eliminate unnecessary school hours that their students must make up on Fridays or Saturdays.

This is an inconvenience to parents, so I am printing for parents the TISD Attendance Matters Sheet in order for them to plan vacations, holidays, workdays off, or most important when to schedule doctors’ appointments.

  • Three-Day weekends: Sept. 5-7, Oct. 2-4, and Dec. 4-6.

•This next reminder is two residents of our Trinity community need help due to life’s unexpected circumstances.

First on Saturday, Aug. 15, a benefit dance is being held at the VFW Hall on Caroline Street from 7-10 p.m. for Salvador Marquez. The Live Jam Session entertainment will be sponsored by Kevin Carter and Rick Villareal. The event is free, but donations are welcome.

If you would like to participate in this music fundraiser, please contact Rick at (936) 577-4383 or Kevin at (936) 414-0347.

The second fundraiser is on Saturday, Aug. 22, also at the VFW Hall. This fundraiser benefits Jerry Tullos, a retired firefighter who for 53 years served the Trinity Volunteer Fire Department. Pulled pork sandwiches and chips are on sale for $10. Drinks are sold in the cantina. The event starts at 11 a.m. Contact Kim Spillman for more information at (936) 661-1568.

•Last weekend I attended a 42 Dominos Tournament in Kirbyville, which is 18 miles south of Jasper. Registration started at 8 a.m., so I had to leave Trinity at 6 a.m. to get there on time.

It was still a little dark outside, but by the time I arrived in Kirbyville, I had passed through some of the most beautiful landscapes and terrain that I have not seen in a long time.

We are creatures of habit and normally I would have driven FM 356 to Highway 190 to Woodville, but fortunately my son was driving, and you know young people; they do not listen to your directions and use the automobile’s GPS service instead.

The tournament was awesome, the food was great, and the prizes were good. I did not win, but it did not matter. The day away from home was worth the trip. I rode back from the tournament with two of the nicest ladies from Trinity who know more about 42 Domino playing than I will ever know.

That was my first tournament to play in and probably my last one to play in because I would rather give the tournament than play in them.

Speaking of my next tournament, it is to be held on Trinity is Oct. 2 at Joseph’s Restaurant in conjunction with the 77th Trinity Community Fair Association and Youth Livestock Show.

The restaurant is on Highway 19 South. The announcements and details will be published and placed around Trinity County businesses in the first week of September in time for the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Local players and out-of-town visitors are welcome.

•Martin Senior Service Center will be closed on Mondays during the months of August, September and October. The meals from 11:30 to 12:30 are still being served on Tuesday through Friday as usual.

The cost of the lunches are $7, but if you are over 80 years of age, the meals are now $5 until further notice, and for more information, please call Sherry at (936) 594-2625.

See you around town.
