The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has reported two deaths of inmates in the past two weeks.
The in-custody death reported around 5 a.m. on April 11 has been identified as Michael Scott Calvert, 61, of Ashland, Ohio.
Calvert reportedly died due to a medical emergency while being held on criminal charges. His death was said to not be related to his incarceration at the Polk County Jail. He was arrested two days before his death on possession of controlled substance charges.
The investigation is still ongoing, pending the Medical Examiner’s report to establish the official cause of death.
On April 17, Polk County Jail staff arranged for Thomas Boone, 70, to be transported by ambulance to CHI Livingston Hospital due to medical issues around 8 a.m. Boone was being held on two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, a violation of his parole.
After evaluation, hospital staff determined Boone required a higher level of care at another facility. Later that day, Boone was released from custody on a medical furlough and transferred on April 18 to a hospital in Houston. On April 20, at approximately 7:25 p.m., Boone died while receiving medical treatment at that facility.
