Firefighters work through busy week

NIGTON — The Groveton Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Lee Road off of FM 2262 on March 4.

Groveton Fire Chief Glenn Hammond said Engine 5 with four firefighters, Hudson VFD responded at about 2 a.m. with a tanker and Trinity Sheriff’s Office were on the scene.

He said the structure, occupied by the Lee family, was a total loss, but the cause was unknown. Also, one member of the family, who was not identified, received bad burns.

Also on March 4, Groveton VFD responded to a down power line on Westville Road. The line was removed from the roadway.

On Wednesday, Groveton VFD responded to a power line fire in the Davy Crockett National Forest on old Highway 287. About 1/2 acre of land was torched.

Hammond said that responding to the blaze were an engine and two brush trucks along with six firefighters, and there were no problems in extinguishing the fire.

  • The Trinity VFD responded to numerous calls for power lines down and trees on roads on March 4 following a severe thunderstorm that blew through the county.

Trinity Fire Chief Keith Johnson said the department received six calls for service due to high winds and also responded to a grass fire in Westwood Shores. Several structures sustained wind damage in the city and at the high school.

On Thursday afternoon, TVFD responded to a structure fire on Wynne Road in Deep River Plantation to assist Walker County fire departments. Crabbs Prairie, Huntsville, Weldon, Dodge, and Lovelady departments worked for more than an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Johnson said the house was completely destroyed.

Trinity responded to a structure fire Sunday morning on 10th Street in Milltown. Three trucks and 16 firefighters arrived on scene to heavy smoke coming from the attic of the residence.

Johnson said firefighters made a quick interior attack and stopped the fire from spreading. The cause appears to be electrical.

Ventura EMS and Trinity County Sheriff's Office assisted.
