The State of Texas hosted its first-ever Fleet Week in Houston, and featured 20 events honoring the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard.
The week began on Wednesday with a Parade of Ships VIP Breakfast held at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. Two members of the Mary Hall Mantooth Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Anthony Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution — Dr. Audrey Young and Rebecca Fleck — were invited to attend.
The event began with a posting of colors by the La Porte ISD Junior ROTC, followed by an invocation from Dr. Walters Jackson, Superintendent of La Porte ISD. The welcome and opening remarks included the introduction of distinguished guests. Dr. Young was recognized for her service on the Texas State Board of Education.
The program featured remarks by City of La Porte Mayor Rick Helton and Port of Houston Commission Chairman Ric Campo. They were followed by motivational speeches given by two Texas natives: Vice Adm. Wayne “Mouse” Baze, Naval Inspector General, and U.S. Marine Corps Major Gen. Matthew T. Mowery. Both emphasized the vital role of the military in defending the United States and ensuring the safety of its citizens. They also encouraged young people to consider military service and pursue careers in the armed forces.
Following the breakfast, attendees viewed the Parade of Ships, accompanied by a ceremonial cannon salute performed by members of the Texas Historical Commission.
Fleet Week Houston continued through April 22, bringing Navy and Coast Guard ships to the Port of Houston. More than 1,000 Marines, Navy sailors, and Coast Guard members were in attendance.
