SILSBEE – A shooting last week near Silsbee resulted in the death of a Woodville man, and a suspect behind bars, facing a murder charge.
According to reports from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Amy Sue Hammond was arrested last Friday night for the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Granville Owen Dennis, Jr., of Woodville.
Authorities reported that when deputies responded to a report of a shooting at an address near Silsbee, they found Dennis deceased from a single gunshot wound to the head. Hammond was taken into custody, and later charged with murder.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the suspect told investigators that Dennis had become “physically aggressive” with her, and as he was sitting on the floor of a bedroom, Hammond pointed a shotgun at him and warned him that she “did not want to have to kill him.”
Also contained within the affidavit: after the two had been “pushing and shoving” each other back and forth throughout the house, Dennis had slipped and fell, while Hammond saw a black .40-caliber pistol on the floor near him. Hammond said she picked it up, pointed it at him, and shot, but missed. Dennis allegedly then took the pistol and shot it, but nearly struck his own leg.
Subsequently, Hammond reported in the affidavit that she regained control of the pistol and pointed it toward Dennis, as he was seated on the floor, shot again and struck him on the right side of his face, fatally wounding him.
Hammond was arraigned before Hardin County Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Melissa Minton and is being held in the county jail on a $750,000 bond for the murder charge.
