GROVETON — Incumbent County Judge Danny Martin held off a challenge from former Judge Doug Page — 1,604 to 1,546 — in the Tuesday primary election.
However, incumbent County Clerk Shasta Bergman lost her re-election bid to challenger Crystal Due 2,328 to 748.
In the Precinct 4 County Commissioner race, incumbent Steven Truss retained his seat, garnering 611 votes to Joe Arnold’s 261.
In the Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace race, Ricky Hortman defeated Randall Wheeler 455-297 to replace Lyle Stubbs, who passed away last year.
Candidates in other races for county-level offices ran as Republicans and without any Democrat challengers, and winners will be presumed to be the winner of the general election. All votes are unofficial until canvassed by the Trinity County Commission.
On the state front, SJC voters mirrored the voting trend. They overwhelmingly backed Gov. Greg Abbott with 78.39 percent of the vote and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick with 84.39 percent of the vote.
Trinity County results show residents favoring Rocky Thigpen over Paulette Carson 2,109 to 715 to replace Trent Ashby as State Representative for District 9. Similarly, throughout the district Thigpen got 22,258 to Carson’s 5,656. A third candidate, Stephanie Sjoberg, has 109 county and 1,008 district votes. Democratic candidate Shelley Tatum received no votes in Trinity County, but 5,840 votes in the district and will face Thigpen in the general election.
Trent Ashby, who is looking to replace retiring Sen. Robert Nichols in State Senate District 3, won over challenger Rhonda Ward 2,223 to 645 in the county and 44,812 to 26,399 in the district. Democratic candidate Bobby Tillman received no votes in Trinity County, but will face Ashby in the general election after gaining 30,903 votes in the district.
Incumbent Audrey Young won 2,052 Trinity votes and 51,820 district-wide votes over George Brian Vachris’ 585 county and 20,999 district votes to gain the GOP nomination for District 8 of the State Board of Education. She will face Democrat Dana van de Walker in the November general election, who garnered 70,000 district votes over challenger Shahzeb Meghani, who gained 28,897.
Incumbent 258th District Judge Travis Kitchens won his nomination over challenger Robert Freyer 9,069 to 6,119.
In federal races, incumbent Sen. John Cornyn will be in a runoff with challenger and former Attorney General Ken Paxton. Cornyn got 41.73 percent of the vote to Paxton’s 40.99 percent.
In the newly redistricted U.S. House of Representatives District 10 race, Chris Gober dominated a field of 9 candidates to gain 51.25 percent of the vote and the Republican nomination. He will face Democrat nominee Caitlin Rourk, who picked up 60.84 percent of the vote over two challengers, in the general election.
