WOODVILLE – A man who was convicted of a 2010 murder died in the Gib Lewis Unit last week, according to a death report from the state.
The state report said James Arlie Hampton, 54, of Athens was found unresponsive in his cell in the Gib Lewis unit in Tyler County. Hampton was taken to the hospital where he died around 12:55 p.m.
According to court records, in December 2010 Hampton was convicted of killing Corey David, a man who was a guest in Hampton’s home. Witness testimony claimed David, Hampton, and Hampton’s wife were involved in a love triangle.
A Henderson County Sheriff’s Office investigator found David’s charred body in a burn pit on Hampton’s property. According to court records, David was later found to have been shot twice by a high-powered rifle.
Hampton appealed his conviction in 2012 but the conviction was upheld.
According to the state record, an autopsy is still pending and no cause of death has been determined for Hampton.
