Texans turned out in droves during Tuesday’s midterm general election and Polk County was no exception, with 39% of the registered voters in the county heading to the polls.
Early voting turnout throughout the state was unusually high, with many counties surpassing previous records. In Polk County, 26.04% of the registered voters cast ballots during the early voting period, a significantly higher percentage than usual. Of the 2,561 absentee ballots requested, only 1,929 were returned.
Livingston and Leggett ISDs each had school board elections in their respective districts. Other than those, the only local contested race on the ballot was that of Polk County Clerk. Ida Bencomo was the Democratic candidate and Margie West was the Republican candidate. Unofficial results reflect West as the winner in the county clerk’s race; Helen Murphy Wiggins, Kevin Grimm, John Allen Slocomb and Andrew Boyce as the winners in the Livingston School Board election; and Jason McDonald, Vicki Russell and Taylor Jackson as the winners in the Leggett School Board election.
Although statewide results were not available at press time, listed below are the unofficial local results. A “D” signifies Democrat, an “R” signifies Republican and an “L” signifies Libertarian. An “I” indicates the candidate is the incumbent.
