Recycle your electronics and e-waste on Friday

Which is Texas Recycles Day

Polk County Recycling & Beautification (PCRB) will host an Electronics Collection Event on Friday, its first project as a new Keep Texas Beautiful affiliate.

“Join us in making a difference – properly recycling your electronics helps conserve resources and reduce environmental impact. Electronics can be recycled in any condition, and recycling is a way to contribute to a more sustainable economy,” PCRB President Kari Miller said.

All items with a plug/cable/cord, or battery operated (with batteries removed), will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. at the Polk County Recycling Center located at 10311 Hwy. 146 (at the intersection of FM 2665).

Items that will be accepted include: TVs and monitors, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, computers, laptops, mobile devices (cellphones, tablets, e-readers, iPods, and MP3 players), CD/DVD/Blu-ray players, game consoles, cameras, camcorders, and digital projectors.

Additionally, household appliances, electronics, and gadgets such as the following will also be accepted: microwaves, stereos, receivers, speakers, routers, network hubs, radios, telephones, calculators, vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, fans and power tools.

Other electronics that will be accepted include cables, cords, power strips, chargers, speaker wire, headphones, game controllers, remotes, mice, keyboards and more.

Due to the cost of shipping and handling, there will be a small fee for TVs, monitors and printers, as these items have minimal recyclable value. Cash or check is preferred and there will be a $2 fee per credit card transaction.

To determine the fee for your TV, monitor or printer, measure them horizontally and not diagonally. TVs and monitors up to 24” wide will cost $5; 24”-50” wide will cost $10; and over 50” wide will cost $20. Printers will cost $5.

PCRB asks that you help coordinate a successful event by registering in advance at www.pcrbtexas.org/electronics.

“Please ensure that all personal data is removed from your devices before recycling. While we will handle your electronics with care, we are not responsible for any data that may remain on devices. For assistance with data removal, consult your device’s manufacturer or a professional data recovery service,” Miller said.
