Recycling center to close at year-end

Unless county takes over operation

Polk County Recycling & Beautification (PCRB), the nonprofit organization that partnered with Polk County to provide a reliable recycling service for the residents of East Texas, will end operation of the Polk County Recycling Center by the end of the year.

Formed by community members for the benefit of the community, PCRB’s goal was to clean up and beautify Polk County through recycling, education and community engagement in litter clean-up activities.

Though the program was sustained by grants, donations and the sale of recyclable materials and the center was manned by a team of volunteers, the operation is no longer sustainable due to diminishing returns as well as a diminishing pool of volunteers.

Representatives are asking Polk County to take over the operation and hope the county will continue to offer some type of recycling program. PCRB will make a formal request to the Polk County Commissioners Court at 10 a.m. Tuesday at 410 E. Church St. Suite A. PCRB representatives indicate they would appreciate attendance at the commissioners court meeting to show support for the organization and for recycling in Polk County.

The recycling center, located at 10311 TX-146 (at FM 2665) in Livingston, no longer accepts plastic, but will continue to accept cardboard, metal cans and electronics through September. It is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

“We appreciate all the support we have received over the last five years. We are especially thankful for all the wonderful volunteers that have dedicated their time to our recycling operation. Thank you for your support and participation,” a statement from PCRB said.
