Paws on the trail – SPCA dogs enjoy day at park

Twelve dogs from the Polk County SPCA recently traded their kennel routines for a day of adventure on the Piney Woods Boardwalk at Lake Livingston State Park.

Organized by Ron Hornsby, executive director of the Polk County SPCA, and Eric Rosenthal, park interpreter and volunteer coordinator with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the outing provided the dogs with socialization, exercise and an opportunity to meet potential adopters.

Accompanied by SPCA volunteers and park staff, the dogs explored the scenic, one-mile raised boardwalk, enjoying new sights, sounds and smells while spending time with caring companions. The excursion provided valuable socialization, exercise and a welcome change of scenery.

Wagging tails, happy barks and smiling faces throughout the day reflected the success of the event. Members of the public also had the opportunity to meet the dogs and learn about adoption, giving several participants a chance to find their forever homes.

Following the success of the outing, organizers say more “Paws on the Trail” adventures are already being planned, giving Polk County SPCA shelter dogs additional opportunities to explore the outdoors, connect with the community and increase their chances of adoption.
