School discussed feasibility of state seat belt edict

CENTERVILLE — The Centerville ISD Board of Trustees will inform the state that it cannot meet a seat belt requirement.

A 2025 Texas school bus safety law, Senate Bill 546, requires school districts in the state to move toward 3-point seat belts on school buses and asks districts for their status.

The law requires school districts to report what type of belts each bus has (none, lap belts, or 3-point) and what it would cost to bring any buses up to the 3-point standard. Therefore, the state can see the expenditure and plan for future support.

Options discussed were purchasing new buses with seat belts installed or retrofitting the current buses; neither were found to be feasible.

After a discussion of the cost during the May 18 meeting, Board Member Dwayne Whittlesey motioned that it didn’t fit the district’s budget, which carried unanimously.  

In other business, the board:

  • approved the calendar for the 2026-27 school year.
