Sept. 11 a time to hope for calmer tempers

Posted

Can you believe it has been 25 years since the bombing of the Twin Towers? I was at home with my husband and he yelled for me to come quickly. He was watching TV as usual, but we knew this was live, happening now on TV, and this was not a joke.

I immediately called my five children to see where they were and told them to be aware of what was taking place all around us. We were all glued to the TV for the next four days. It was horrible to see.

It was the second most horrible disaster that I had watched as it happened on national TV, the first being the assignation of JFK. Three days I sat glued to the TV (1963 TV was black and white for most folks), and I could not believe my eyes. I was pregnant with my first child 62 years ago.

In addition to that disaster, there was an earthquake going on in Alaska when my husband flew to help his Mother get his Father home to Texas. His father had just suffered a stroke at a military base in Nome, Alaska, and the army was flying them home to San Antonio.

I was staying with my parents in Midland, because I was “great with child”. It was my first airplane ride, and my excitement and thrill were unbelievable. However, what happened to the President of the United States the next day was more unbelievable.

Sixty years later every person who witnessed this event can still recall where, when, and who they were with on that fateful day. Thus, this is why we still have so many accounts of the shooting and the days that followed.

When you are over 80 years of age, events begin to fade and history must be told via film or books, i.e., World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Korean War, Vietnam, etc. It is really horrible that our president has chosen to put us in another war. Our children should not have to die for any cause, good or bad in my opinion.

Now for happy news.
