WOODVILLE – The commissioners courtroom inside of the Tyler County Courthouse was filled with young people on Monday morning during the regular meeting of the county’s governing body.
These youngsters were present, and numbered in excess of 20, to learn about the functions of county government. They were all participants in the county’s summer youth work program. The program is now in its 18th years, and Terry Allen, who heads the program up, said that through the years, hundreds of students, from all over the county, have worked at various jobs for the county under the program’s guidance.
Many of the workers have gone on to work for the county, and Allen, in her remarks to the commissioners, referenced one past participant, Maegan Pope, who currently serves as Jasper County’s auditor.
Allen thanked the commissioners and Tyler County Judge Milton Powers for their support of the program and said that the current crop of workers are there to “work hard and learn a lot.”
Hudson appointed as acting Pct. 4 Commissioners
During Monday’s meeting, the commissioners approved a certificate of appointment for Donna Hudson to serve as acting commissioner of Pct. 4. Hudson will serve out the remainder of the term left by her late husband, Charles “Buck” Hudson, who died in May.
Hudson was appointed by Judge Powers last Monday, who said he is confident that she will serve the citizens of Precinct 4 “with dedication and integrity.”
Hudson is set to serve as commissioner until the November general election, and until a successor is duly elected and qualified under state law. She took her oath of office, and the commissioners approved her bond on Monday.
Howard stepping down as extension agent
The county’s extension agent, Amanda Howard, is stepping down from her position. The commissioners accepted her resignation, which is effective July 31.
Howard, who has served in the office for three years, said she was grateful to the county officials for all of the support given to her and her office throughout her employment with the county. She has accepted a position with Spurger ISD where she will teach animal science classes.
