October brings Halloween with two weekends where the Haunted Jail will be open. I will give you all the details soon. This is organized and is a fundraiser of the San Jacinto County Historical Commission. Recently, the Commission received a donation from Glen Jackson of a rice/wheat huller to be put next to the Corn Shed at Old Town Coldspring. This is a small hand-cranked machine used to harvest the crops.
•Last Friday, Coldspring Senior Center served stuffed potatoes and delicious cake and ice cream. This meal was sponsored by Allan Graves in memory of his late wife, Deborah. Unfortunately, Allan had been ill a few weeks ago and had been hospitalized. He has moved to a rehab center and is going home soon. Allan is a regular at the Center and counts it one of his favorite places.
•Oct. 3 is the Coldspring Library fund raiser, the Murder Mystery Dinner at Coldspring Community Shelter. Tickets are $70 each; elegant evening wear and masks are encouraged. Dinner is catered by Mary Gray Catering. A silent auction and a cash bar add to the pleasure of the night. The actors are the same group as last year. They were excellent in the way they arranged the mystery and revealed the murderer at the end.
•Oct. 17 is the Youth Fall Celebration at the Impact Center in Shepherd. From 5-10 p.m. expect a fun-filled night. Brenda Myers, founder of the Impact Center, says all kiddos are welcome and the first 20 get a free pumpkin to decorate. You can also bring your own to decorate on site and enter the competition. Pumpkins have been donated by Will Hall of Shepherd. Bring a flashlight since there will be an egg hunt in the dark. A fire pit, weenie roast, s’mores, candy bags, games with a movie, crafts and a Halloween drawing contest are included.
•On Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m., Coldspring Garden Club will visit Massey's Home-Grown Quality Plants. Located at 1502 Shraderville Road in Shepherd, members will be shown around the gardens of flowers, bushes, fruit trees and more. And, yes, you may buy some if you wish. This excellent business has just joined as members of Shepherd Chamber of Commerce. There will be a ribbon cutting soon. Call them for more information at (479) 790-8017.
•El Taquito Restaurant in Shepherd has a new backdrop, which is an excellent place for taking a photo. You are welcome to do this if you are eating there. (I love their shrimp quesadillas.)
•Last Thursday, Dr. Anita Wright and her team from the Community Church Outreach visited Woodland Park Nursing Home for a service with singing and delicious treats for the patients. This is a monthly gathering, and the service is open to all. Call Dr. Anita Wright for more information at (832) 527-0154.
•Shepherd Chamber of Commerce Secretary Tricia Falls and I visited the Barron's Sweet Cream Dairy Farm, classified as A2A2 Dairy, on FM 1725 on Saturday. We both bought milk and a selection of breads and muffins. Amber's husband Hunter also runs his plumber's business, Agape Plumbing; call (281) 610-4289. Amber runs Southern Shine Catering. All businesses became members of the Chamber, call (936) 661-6031.
If you are a Trivia fan, make sure to come to the fundraiser for Shepherd Library on Oct. 24 at Coldspring Methodist Fellowship Hall. The Time Warp Trivia starts at noon but come at 11:30 a.m. to chat and grab some food. Time Warp? Yes, dress in a different era, anywhere from the 1920s to present day. There will be a silent auction and a contest for the best costume. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids and under 5 years are free. You can buy tickets at the Library, call (936) 628-3515. Details are also on the Library Facebook page. The Friends of Shepherd Library hosts this fundraiser.
Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.
