Three brothers whose San Jacinto County homes were significantly damaged by Hurricane Beryl are rebuilding side by side, thanks to the Texas General Land Office (GLO).
On June 17, the Texas GLO’s Homeowner Assistance Program team joined Leon Reese, Herman Reese, and Arthur Reese, along with their families, to recognize a significant milestone in rebuilding the homes they lost during Hurricane Beryl. The brothers, whose homes sit within walking distance of one another in Coldspring, each sustained severe storm damage and applied for assistance through the Texas GLO's 2024 Disasters Homeowner Assistance Program.
The Reese brothers' experience reflects the challenges many families face after a disaster. Each home experienced extensive damage but also held precious memories of family gatherings and a treasured life together. But the Texas GLO’s Homeowner Assistance Program offered energy efficient and disaster resilient reconstruction that includes accessibility features that will help the brothers live more comfortably now and in the future. The brothers’ family members expressed relief and joy knowing each brother will be safe and secure in their new homes.
“The Texas General Land Office, really I appreciate everything. It’s just a blessing, that’s all I can say and I want to thank you,” said Arthur Reese.
“It’s going to be nice to know you’re safe,” said Leon. “And not have to worry — not have to worry about the water washing into your house.”
Leon Reese and Arthur Reese received keys to the newly rebuilt homes. Herman Reese's home has been approved for reconstruction and is nearing construction. On the day that Leon and Arthur’s recovery concluded, Herman toured his brothers’ new homes and then sat down with his Homeowner Assistance Program case manager to select the finishes for his new home — coming soon.
“Oh man, it is a wonderful feeling. A blessing of God through y’all to help me. Just blessed to know that the house is going to withstand a lot of nature’s forces.” Herman Reese stated. “Texas General Land Office, I appreciate everything that y’all made possible to have a safer and more energy efficient home for me and my family.”
“Recovery is about far more than rebuilding homes, it is about restoring hope and helping Texas families move forward,” said Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. “The Reese brothers remind us that disaster recovery can change the trajectory of an entire family. We are proud to celebrate these milestones alongside Arthur, Leon, Herman, and their loved ones as they continue their journey toward recovery.”
The event brought together friends and family members, local leaders, and recovery officials to witness three rebuilding stories unfolding simultaneously. With all three homes located within walking distance of one another, the Reese family's experience provides a rare view of how disaster recovery can benefit not just a community, but also a family.
