We used to institutionalize people like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Now we institutionalize their delusions.
In a functioning society, someone who swims in bacteria-polluted creeks to make a political point or spreads conspiracy theories about vaccines, Wi-Fi, and mind control would be viewed as a fringe crank. Perhaps dangerous, but irrelevant. Yet in Donald Trump’s America, RFK Jr. serves as Secretary of Health and Human Services. The result has been disastrous policy already resulting in deaths.
We’re no longer debating public health. We’re witnessing its slow execution.
During his confirmation hearing, RFK Jr. promised Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican doctor and vaccine expert, that he would maintain the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Cassidy believed him. But Kennedy quickly broke that promise.
First, he appointed anti-vaccine activists to critical federal science positions. Then he forced out senior vaccine experts from the FDA and CDC. In June, he went further, firing all 17 members of ACIP, the key committee that determines vaccine recommendations and insurance coverage. He replaced them with conspiracy theorists, including Lynn Redwood, a well-known anti-vaccine advocate. Redwood once introduced herself at a CDC meeting as a “private citizen” before promoting pseudoscience.
This hastily assembled, evidence-free panel quickly voted, without peer review or proper scientific process, to restrict access to safe and effective flu vaccines. Dr. Fiona Havers, a senior CDC advisor who resigned in protest, described the meeting as a farce: “ACIP is not a talk show,” she said. Yet, under RFK Jr., that’s exactly what it’s become, a platform for cranks and a weapon against science.
Children are dying. This is not rhetorical. Two American children have already died from measles, a disease eradicated decades ago in the U.S. Pediatric flu deaths are now at record highs. And this is just the beginning.
We’ve fully entered the era of trading Lamborghinis for lives.
This isn’t merely about RFK Jr.’s personal delusions. It reflects a governing philosophy. Trump’s second administration isn’t simply mismanaging government; it’s deliberately dismantling it. Institutions such as the CDC, FDA, EPA, and DOJ are being emptied out and restaffed with loyalists, profiteers, and ideologues—people who view regulation not as protection but as a barrier to power.
The vaccine system exemplifies this perfectly. Vaccine recommendations were previously based on decades of peer-reviewed science, ethical standards, and meticulous regulation. ACIP’s recommendations, formed over months or even years, established trust and insurance coverage. The process was careful, deliberate, and science based.
Now? An unqualified individual presents internet conspiracy theories, and a handpicked panel rewrites national vaccine policy in a single afternoon.
This isn’t healthcare. It’s policy driven by performance art, and it’s deadly.
Behind this lies the darker truth, that cruelty itself is the point. RFK Jr. is not simply misguided; he is malevolent. His anti-vaccine crusade has long been detached from reality and consequences. Now, supported by federal authority, his crusade harnesses the entire machinery of government.
Trump appointed RFK Jr. precisely because of his extremism. It sends a clear message that science is irrelevant, expertise is meaningless, and only loyalty and spectacle matter.
Making this more insidious is its alignment with economic incentives. Deregulating vaccine oversight is not just political theater, but it’s a boon for private insurance companies and profit-driven healthcare ventures. When ACIP no longer officially recommends a vaccine, insurers aren’t obligated to cover it. This results in increased out-of-pocket costs, fewer vaccinations, and a market primed for alternative, often predatory, health products. It paves the way for boutique medical care, concierge services, and unregulated supplements that exploit fear and misinformation.
Meanwhile, public programs are gutted. Medicaid budgets are slashed. Public hospitals deteriorate, while hedge fund-owned urgent care chains emerge. This isn’t merely ideological chaos—it’s the calculated redistribution of critical healthcare infrastructure into the hands of those who profit from crises. It’s disaster capitalism delivered through a syringe.
So here we stand, watching lives traded for status symbols, seeing children die so billionaires can posture about freedom, and witnessing one of the world’s most effective public health systems dismantled by a man who once swam through sewage to make a point.
If this feels apocalyptic, it’s because it is. Yet the truly frightening aspect is that it’s no longer shocking. The public barely notices, the media shrugs, and the Senate, fully aware of who RFK Jr. was when they confirmed him, remains silent.
We used to institutionalize people like RFK Jr. Now we hand them control over the nation’s health. This is not a lapse in judgment. It’s a collapse of governance. Unless we confront this reality loudly and directly, the consequences will only deepen.
A nation that trades Lamborghinis for lives has no future.
