COLDSPRING — San Jacinto County gathered to honor the nation’s veterans and recognize one of its own, Vietnam War veteran Carl Weber, whose bravery and dedication exemplify the spirit of Veterans Day.
Severely wounded in Vietnam during the battle on Shakey’s Hill, Cambodia, Weber survived his injuries and went on to serve his community as a firefighter with the Houston Fire Department before retiring and settling in San Jacinto County.
The ceremony began with the Raising of the American Flag in front of the San Jacinto County Courthouse, led by the Shepherd High School JROTC. The students proudly posted the colors, setting a tone of respect and honor that carried throughout the event.
The Rev. Joe Scott offered a heartfelt prayer, asking for blessings for our veterans and expressing gratitude for their sacrifices. Following the invocation, the National Anthem was sung, stirring a sense of unity among all present.
County Judge Fritz Faulkner extended a warm welcome to local officials, guests, and veterans, emphasizing the county’s pride in honoring Carl Weber and recognizing all veterans who have served our nation with courage and commitment.
The keynote address was given by 258th District Court Judge Travis Kitchens, who shared the story of Shakey’s Hill. Kitchens’ account brought to life the sacrifice and bravery of Weber and his fellow soldiers during a challenging time in our nation’s history.
Dale Everitt, San Jacinto County’s Veterans Service officer, spoke about Weber’s life of service. After his military duty, Weber continued to protect and serve as a Houston firefighter, demonstrating the unwavering dedication he has shown throughout his life.
To close the ceremony, Weber was presented with awards and commendations, honoring his service and dedication to the nation and his community. These accolades symbolize the profound gratitude felt by all in attendance for Weber’s courage and continued commitment to others.
With the final words of thanks, the ceremony concluded, leaving a lasting impression of the respect and appreciation held for Carl Weber and all veterans who have answered the call to serve. The event honored their sacrifices and renewed our collective gratitude for the freedoms they have secured.
