A quartet of Warren High School debaters went from not ever having debated to facing serious competition within a span of two months, according to WHS debate coach Cathy D’Entremont.

D’Entremont said that “they did not even know what this was two months ago.” Joel Cowart placed second at the Regionals tournament, held in Beaumont, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and Izzy Ledbetter placed sixth. In addition, Landon Bell was named “Outstanding Presiding Officer,” and Emma Smith served as an alternate.

Last month, at a tournament in Nederland, Smith and Cowart received first place, and Ledbetter placed third.

D’Entremont started the debate program at Warren, and came from Woodville High School, where she coached UIL state qualifiers for six straight years. She said she is very proud of her students, and they are all excited about future competitions, and the future of the speech and debate program at Warren.
