Chris Bennett, 5-year resident of Ivanhoe, Texas passed May 11th at age 77. He was born and raised in Houston and lived there until he moved to Tyler County, to his "happy place" on Lake Charmaine that his parents built in 1975.
He fell in love with our community and really became a part of life here. He served on the Tyler County Heritage Society Board until his illness prohibited him from attending meetings on a regular basis. He often said that he didn't realize life could be so good. A demonstration of his involvement was the Celebration of his life that was attended by more than 70 people just 3 days before he passed.
Chris lived a life overflowing with love, laughter, music, adventure, and devotion to the people around him. To know Chris was to know kindness, generosity, and joy. He loved people deeply and sincerely, always wanting the very best for everyone he met. If someone needed help, encouragement, advice, or simply a reason to smile, Chris was there without hesitation. He would do absolutely anything for anyone.
Chris had a heart as big as his personality, and one of the things people loved most about him was his ability to laugh — especially at himself. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for making people feel comfortable, welcomed, and loved. His smile could light up a room, and his laughter was contagious. Whether he was sneaking off for donuts he wasn’t supposed to have, stopping for a Dairy Queen Blizzard, or hiding McDonald’s ice cream evidence after wood carving outings, Chris made ordinary moments unforgettable.
He loved to travel and always returned home with fascinating stories from his adventures and work trips — from Broadway productions and Star Trek exhibits to live performances of Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Music fueled him. He sang constantly, loved choir from an early age, and filled cars and homes with Broadway soundtracks booming like concert speakers. He came from musical parents whose kindness and love shaped the man he became.
Chris was a man of incredibly broad interests and talents. He loved craftsmanship and creativity, built beautiful spaces for family to gather, and collected hundreds upon hundreds of movies that he generously shared with everyone around him. He could talk about bodybuilding one moment and Broadway musicals the next. He even won a bodybuilding contest, proudly proving that strength and discipline were part of who he was — though friends and family will forever remember that his favorite workout was the chest fly. Humble and good-natured, he could laugh about all of it with that unmistakable grin.
A big part of his life for years was the MS 150 bike ride from Houston to Austin. He rode it 38 times! His determination and perseverance were legendary. During one MS 150 ride, Chris broke four ribs and still finished the ride. He helped create the Ride Marshal program for the MS 150 and inspired younger generations through his leadership, encouragement, and example. His training and support gave others the confidence to complete rides they never thought possible.
Above all else, Chris loved his family fiercely. He was a devoted father, grandfather, partner, uncle, and friend who made sure the people he loved never doubted it for a second. Every goodbye ended with “I love you.” Those words became a hallmark of his life and the lasting assurance he gave to everyone close to him. Even in his final moments, when he was believed to be unresponsive, he softly whispered back, “I love you.” Those were his last words — a final reflection of the love that defined his entire life.
Chris Bennett truly lived life to the fullest until the very end. He was genuine, intelligent, hardworking, compassionate, and endlessly curious about the world. He leaves behind countless stories, songs, laughter-filled memories, and a legacy of love that will continue through every person fortunate enough to have known him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Donna Bennett.

He is survived by his partner, Catherine Bennett of Ivanhoe; sons, Jordan Bennett of Katy, and Brent Bennett and wife Kelly of Waco; daughter, Miranda Fischer and fiancé Trea of Magnolia; nieces, Laura Bennett Brackin of Willis, and Jennifer Greenwell of Spring; nephew, Enrique Greenwell of Mexico City, Mexico; 5 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and endlessly loved.
